I began looking for a locking, large capacity mailbox after we put a stop on our mail during a vacation, only to come home and find that our mail had still been delivered. The look of this mailbox was very appealing in pictures, and did not disappoint in person. It is made out of aluminum, but the texture on it gives it more of a look of cast iron or bronze. It appears that it is large enough to hold many days worth of mail (we have not put it to the test yet). As for mounting, it was designed to slide over bolts in the wall through slotted holes in the back that sort of lets the mailbox drop into place. This would have allowed someone (with enough force) to simply lift the entire box up and off of the wall. To counter this, I purchased some "fender washers" to use between the heads of the bolts and the slotted holes so that it could not be lifted off. That being said, I fully understand that if someone were to really want to steal our mail, they would steal it. I think the locking compartment could be pried open with the right tool, or another way would be to fish the mail out through the mail drop slot with some type of mechanical fingers. If someone wanted it bad enough, and were brazen enough, I'm sure the entire mailbox could still be pried right off the wall with the right pry bar and enough force. Like my Dad used to say, "locks only keep the honest people out". I look at this mailbox as being a deterrent to mail theft, but not theft proof - which I think can be said about just about anything. Something else to consider is outgoing mail. Our old mailbox was metal, so we used a magnetic clip to hold our outgoing mail. With this new one being aluminum, we can no longer use the magnetic clip, so we just let our outgoing mail partially stick out under the lid and let the lid hold it. This arrangement works ok for now, but I may do something a little different to hold our outgoing in the future. Very happy with the looks and build quality of my purchase, and it was a very nice upgrade from our old mailbox. I get the feeling that it will last for many years to come.
