Description

Broken relationships between adult children and their parents is a widespread phenomenon. While the parent-child attachment relationship is of critical importance for the child in the early years of life, the parent-child relationship continues to be a source of great importance over the course of the individual’s life span for both the child and the parent. For adults and adult children who are estranged/alienated from each other, the pain and dissatisfaction never fully go away. Despite the prevalence of the problem of ruptured relationships, there are few resources available for mental health professionals working with this population. This book provides a tool for clinicians to turn to when they are working with adult children and their parents seeking to resolve conflict, improve communication, and enhance their relationships.

Yes! This is a therapist's step-by-step guide. Alienation is extremely hard to treat because this dysfunctional family dynamic is so complex, counter-intuitive, and includes many aspects that require actions that are new and contrary to nearly all other therapeutic models. Many targeted parents had to wait until their child/ren reached 18 to have access to this start this process of working through conflict, improve communication, and enhance relationships, and sometimes start reunification. Targeted parents and the children are in most cases wary, uncomfortable, and nervous. This book is well organized and thorough as it is loaded with explanations of the theoretical principles, plus in-session, and out-of-session activities. This is the only book on this process! This is Dr. Amy J. L. Baker's 9th book on parental alienation (along with dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles). Dr. Baker's specialist expertise goes back more than 15 years and also includes passing the legal profession’s Daubert criteria for acceptance as an expert witness in numerous states.Note to therapists: This intervention is the critical first step in the process to lessen the child's psychological issues created by the alienation. Thank you for undertaking this difficult but rewarding challenge that leverages your skills to make such a big difference in the psychological health trajectories for these adult children and the next generation of children that they will raise!
